I’m Wendy M. Neugent, a middle grade author who writes historical mysteries designed to help young readers think critically about the world they inherit.
My flagship series, History Detective Club, follows modern kids who slip through time and experience pivotal moments in American history—not as distant facts, but as lived, uncertain moments filled with moral choices, conflicting loyalties, and real human consequences.
These stories center empathy, critical thinking, democratic ideals, and social justice themes in age-appropriate ways, inviting readers to ask big questions:
-
Who gets to decide what is “right”?
-
What does freedom really mean—and for whom?
-
How do ordinary people shape history through their choices?
My first series is set primarily during the American Revolution. The books explore issues like freedom of the press, civic responsibility, slavery, resistance, and courage—encouraging kids (and the adults who read with them) to see history as something alive, complicated, and deeply relevant today.
My goal is to create stories that:
-
Foster critical thinking and curiosity
-
Build empathy and historical awareness
-
Support thoughtful conversations between kids, parents, and educators
History Detective Club books are often used by homeschool families, teachers, and libraries, and are especially loved by readers who believe stories can help raise engaged, compassionate citizens.
All books are printed to order, using a bespoke print-on-demand model through my printing partner, Bookvault, with printing facilities in both the UK and the United States. This approach helps reduce waste by ensuring books are printed only when ordered. Books may be printed in the UK or the US, depending on whether hardcover or paperback is ordered. For every paperback or hardcover book purchased directly from me, a tree is planted through a partnership between Bookvault and Ecologi, supporting global reforestation and climate-positive initiatives.
